DNA Evidence

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is found within all cells, apart from red blood cells, and is therefore invaluable in criminal investigations, being found in various body fluids such as blood, saliva, semen and vaginal secretions, as well as in hair roots.

Once a sample is received at a laboratory, it can be analysed by different techniques, such as the standard SGM+ (Second Generation Multiplex Plus) system or the sensitive LCN (Low Copy Number) system.

The resultant DNA profile can then be compared with a reference DNA profile from the Suspect, in order to ascertain whether that person may or may not have contributed DNA to the profile found.

If DNA components are found in common, a statistical probability of the DNA having originated from someone else is usually produced. This is often seen in statements as follows:
